Running GDT on Mac OS X or Linux

Minimize

Linux PenguinGuitar & Drum Trainer runs on Windows, but with Linux or Mac running OSX and a virtual machine or multibooting, you can run Guitar & Drum Trainer on an Intel processor computer. Mac & Linux users should note that the system requirements are for Windows, and Mac & Linux system requirments will differ somewhat. Running Guitar & Drum Trainer inside of a virtual machine will require higher specs than simply running it with Windows as a dual booting system.

Mac OS XNote that for Macs, an Intel chip based Mac is required.

There are many different virtual machine and multibooting options available for Mac & Linux users.

Disclaimer: Guitar & Drum Trainer is not tested for Linux or Mac OS X for virtual machines and is not tested with Apple hardware running multibooting software. Support for Guitar & Drum Trainer is limited to issues under hardware-native Windows, and is not available for virtual machine or multibooting software issues. The following is meant to be a helpful guide for people running Linux, Mac OS X, and other non-Windows operating systems. No claims about performance or compatibility are claimed for Guitar & Drum Trainer under these conditions.

Virtual Machines (VMs) †

Some VM software suffers from compatibility problems in some areas. Should you encounter problems, a different VM program may work better for you. The commercial VM software available is generally excellent. If you still experience problems, you may wish to consider using a multibooting system instead.

The following represents a very small selection of VMs. Please see here for a comparision of VMs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_virtual_machines

VirtualBox: This GNU GPL VM software runs on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Open Solaris, BSD and several other operating systems. It is owned by Sun Microsystems, and boasts high performance for enterprise or home use. More information about VirtualBox...

Wine: Wine has been around for a long time and has finally reached past the v1.0 stage. It runs on a variety of Linux distributions and Windows. It does not have a Mac OS X port, but there is a commercial spin-off that runs on OS X. Running .NET software under Wine (http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#head-1a8bea6a1e093978b62d2df3b066ecb3843e2fcf) requires winetricks. http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks . More information about Wine...

CrossOver: This commercial version of Wine is available with both Linux and Mac OS X versions. It does not support the Microsoft .NET Framework, and so will not run Guitar & Drum Trainer.

Parallels: This is touted as the premiere commercial VM for Mac OS X to run Linux and Windows, and supports .NET. More information about Parallels...

VMware Workstation: Perhaps the most popular VM, VMware Workstation is a mature product. VMware Workstation is available for Windows and Linux. There is a Mac OS X version available that has been rebranded as VMware Fusion. More information about VMware Workstation...

VMware Fusion: This VMware product is basically just VMware Workstation for Mac OS X running on Intel chips. Significantly, it also supports x64 architectures in addition to x86, giving it some wider appeal over Parallels. More information about VMware Fusion...

Multibooting Software ‡

Multibooting is a better alternative to VM software for some purposes, including running GDT under Linux or on a Mac OS X Intel machine. As the operating system is running directly on top of the hardware, problems that would otherwise affect a VM are not present, and compatibility issues disappear.

Boot Camp: This is Apple's own multibooting software designed to help Mac users run Windows software on Mac hardware. More information about Boot Camp...

LILO: This is a standard operating system selection tool for Linux. Experienced users will likely already know this utility. More information about LILO...

The above virtual machine programs represent only a small number of selected virtual machines with no preference given to order. Selected VMs were chosen based on popularity, availability, or for other reasons of compatibility.

The above multibooting software programs are selected based on availability and popularity. Many other choices exist.
