Find Musical Notes with EQ Visualizations

Figuring Out Musical Notes

Figuring out new music in Guitar & Drum Trainer is very easy.

In this project, I've made a loop for a riff, and for some individual notes. First, let's have a look in the EQ visualizations, and we can find individual notes by looking at the peaks. Here I've got an A#. Let's have a quick listen, and then look at the individual notes.

[Music Plays]

That's enough to get an idea of what the actual music is.

Now let's go over here (to the GDT Controls & Options window) and we'll have a look at the individual notes one at a time. I'll play the riff, then I'll start going down this list here (the list of individual loops for notes).

[Music Plays]

[Clicking on individual note loops shows each note in the EQ visualizations.]

As I went down this list, you could hear as we were going along here (the zoomed wave form during playback).

I've made short little loops here that are very very short. This one starts at 2.32 seconds and ends at 2.38 seconds, so it's quite short. Look at the next loop. It starts at 2.56 seconds and ends at 2.69 seconds. So we're only looking at a tenth of a second or so.

By examining very short loops, we can easily hover our mouse over the EQ visualizations to find notes. Let's have a quick look here.

[Music Plays - Clicks on F5 loop and mouse hovers over peak displaying an F5 note]

There's our F.

[Music Still Playing - Clicks on D#5 loop and mouse hovers over peak displaying a D#5 note]

There's our D#.

[Music Still Playing - Clicks on A#4 loop and mouse hovers over peak displaying a A#4 note]

And here's our A#.

[Music Still Playing - Clicks on G4 loop and mouse hovers over peak displaying a G4 note]

[Music Still Playing - Clicks on C5 loop and mouse hovers over peak displaying a C5 note]

We can go back and have a look at our C.

[Music Still Playing - Clicks on D#5 loop and mouse hovers over peak displaying a D#5 note]

And back to our D# there.

While actually listening to the music isn't that informative, listening for the tone and hovering over peaks easily reveals the notes.

I hope this has been informative for you, and helps you learn your music easier and faster.

Video Notes: Finding Notes

The music sample used here is not representative of all music. It was chosen to illustrate the general principles in finding musical notes in Guitar & Drum Trainer. More complex music makes finding notes more difficult, but with practice, notes and general tonalities can usually be located by combining a sharp eye for changes in the EQ visualization with what you hear. Best result will come when playing along to find notes.

The general strategy is:

  1. Create a loop for a riff and save it (Controls & Options window > Looping > click '+' button)
  2. Visually locate notes and create very small loops over them
  3. Hover your mouse over peaks in the EQ visualizations to find the note
  4. Play the note on your instrument to confirm what you see
  5. Repeat steps #2~4 until you're satified with the loop
  6. Save the mini-loop for the note as in #1 above
  7. Repeat steps #2~6 for more notes
  8. Practice your music!
