I'm far beyond the point of being nice at this point. If you're an Apple worshipper, stop reading now. My patience has run out and the following blog goes straight into rant-mode. I've given the iPod Nano more than enough time to figure out just how bad it really is. Again, if you're an Apple lover, bail out now... Here's a happy link for you -- Apple.com.

I imagine it would be difficult to make a more difficult and stubborn product. And iTunes has to be about the worst piece of software I've ever used.

The iPod earphones have less than 10~12 hours of playback on them because I use my headphones instead, but they crackle and are just horrible to listen to. In my first impressions blog, I wasn't very kind to them, but I only used them for a few minutes. Now, having used them a bit more I've seen the light (or darkness) - they are far worse than I would ever expect to see from Apple. Given the quality of the iPod earbuds, I'd be suprised if they could give them away for free. Yes - they are that bad. I've bought crummy headsets before, and they are the worst I've used so far, excepting a mono earplug from the late 70's that at least didn't crackle but had horrible sound quality (it was meant for low-quality mono voice recordings on tape decks).

The Nano skips at times, which is tolerable, but using it is just painful. It's ok once songs and podcasts are in it, but it's absolute torture to get songs/podcasts into it.

Removing songs is equally difficult. Everything is counter intuitive and when you finally figure it out, it's buggy and frustrating. And then it doesn't work!

The documentation for the iPod Nano is non-existent. It's a couple pages that tell you that the Nano is a Nano, and that the play button is for play. Absolutely useless information. Apple would do well to include instructions on how to do things like remove things from an iPod (which they don't). There is a PDF, but god knows I loathe reading onscreen (yes - I'm being stubborn about this). When I buy a hardware product I want a printed manual. I don't want to read onscreen. I have to do enough of that already. Skipping the printed manual for a $300 product is just plain cheap in the extreme. Considering that they sell millions of them, I'm sure they can get a decent price on a flimsy 80 page pamphlet.

But back to iTunes... Grrr... That's how songs get sync'd on an iPod, and it's piss poor. It's buggy and just doesn't work properly. How can I sum it up? Well, here are my impressions:

  1. It's counter-intuitive. Anything that you want to do takes 10x as long as with any other piece of software I've ever used.
  2. It's buggy. Constant error messages about permissions (I'm using an administrator account... how does that happen? See below...), never ending dialogs prompting me to do things that I already said, “Don't ask me again“ for. AAARRRGGGHHH~!
  3. Adding or removing songs & podcasts on the iPod Nano is nigh unto impossible to get right.
  4. Pure frustration...

I keep getting a “An error occurred while updating the default player for audio file types. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation.“ Huh? I'm the f'in admin! I've got all the privileges that I want! And then some! How does that happen? And that's just 1 of the silly errors. The rest only get worse...

Ok, maybe I'm being harsh, but I'd expect a bit more from Apple than they've delivered. If iTunes were free, I wouldn't complain, but I've paid for it. And it's not delivering.

Having dealt with support from large companies before, I know darn well that there's not a snowball's hope in hades that anything would ever get fixed. (Can anybody say PanasonicSucks.org?)

I really do hate iTunes and wish that there were another piece of software that could replace it. I suppose I should search for something, because it's just wasting my time.

And for those that value having their computer run quick... Man... Avoid it. At the moment it's chewing up 14 MB of RAM for no reason. The iPod isn't even connected! It's tempting to label it malware...

Battery power... Again this is really weak in the iPod Nano. I get less than a day from it. I use headphones, but the battery power in the Nano is still very weak. Suprise! Another diappointment...

I'm definitely going to get rid of my iPod Nano then get myself a decent player. I'm going to look into getting a Cowon first. They seem to have a better product and have some really slick stuff coming out. The new iAUDIO 6 looks pretty cool. But I bet it actually works as advertised.

Frustrated to death,

Renegade

Re: iPod Final Impressions...

Personally, I love my nano.. though I have to agree the software to go with it sucks, but the nano it'self I have no problems with. It plays great, I've never had it skip or anything like that. Maybe I'm just one of the lucky few.

Re: iPod Final Impressions...

Hey cuellar52...

i had that permissions issue as well, even being the admin. it started right after i rolled back my computer to a restore point from the previous day.

Go select the properties of your folders, and i'll bet that the permissions are set to "Read Only." Not only the iTunes folder, but all of them. Uncheck "Read only" or better just change all the folder permissions back to 777 and you're all good.

Re: iPod Final Impressions...

umm... check if you have any shared folders. I got the error when I tried to download missing album artwork for my library, and simply put, you are not the administrator for those shared folders. Therefore it would make sense if you have preferences that try to edit or add to music files, and you have shared folders, that you will get this error. Worked for me...
