Bringing the GDT files into this century, I've decided to post a System of a Down song - Aerial.
Perhaps one of the most interesting things is System of a Down's use of minor scales in Aerial with an equally cool descending riff that dominates the song.
C - D - D# - F - G - G#
Or,
D# - D - C - F - D# - D - D# - F - G - G# - G - F - D# - D - C
In tab:
D:-----------------------------------|
A:-----------------------------------|
F:-----------------------------------|
C:-3-2-0---5-3-2---3-5-7-8-7-5-3-2-0-|
G:-3-2-0---5-3-2---3-5-7-8-7-5-3-2-0-|
C:-3-2-0---5-3-2---3-5-7-8-7-5-3-2-0-|
The song is in C minor (E flat major in the Aeolian mode) which is good for brass instruments. However, parts of the song drone on G#, a sixth above C. (I'm a bit out of practice myself, so I really NEED GDT a lot... I could be mistaken about the key...)
The guitar tuning is also quite different. While you've got your regular drop D tunings, and half step drop tunings, for Aerial you'll need to tune your guitar to a drop D tuning, and then drop everything another whole step.
While it isn't to hard to play, what's going on in Aerial is very different from a lot of Aeolian stuff. It has a more phrygian feel, which just seems wrong, but it works.
The song isn't too hard to play and is a lot of fun. I'd recomment dropping the speed in GDT to about -50% or so for beginners and -20% or so if you're comfortable with it.
For playing the song with GDT, you'll have to tune your guitar to a drop D tuning and then pitch shift Aerial up a whole step in GDT. That's just easier than retuning to the actual tuning. Of course you can also just pitch shift the entire song by 2 whole steps and then adjust the tab, which might be easier for a lot of people.
