My rants are scathing, but my praise is equally high for deserving companies and products. The Planet fits into the praise-worthy category as they have stellar products and spectacular services.
I've used other hosts and dedicated hosts in the past, and the only one that comes close is Rackspace. Everything else that I've tried falls very far short of what you get at The Planet. (I would actively discourage anyone from ever using Layered Technologies as from what I've seen, their incompetence brings new meaning to the word "morons".)
Anyways, I just got another email from The Planet:
Dear Valued Customer: On June 20, 2010, between 06:00am and 10:00am CST, our Networking group will be performing code upgrades on IBR04.Dllstx3 to resolve several bugs. While there is no expected outage, you may see slight routing changes as this device is gracefully isolated out of our network. This may apply to end-users who are routing into our network in Dallas even if your server is in Houston.
While we've scheduled a five-hour maintenance window, we anticipate no downtime for your services.
If you have any questions about the emergency maintenance, please contact your sales representative or our Customer Care Department through our Orbit ticketing system, Live Support chat, or by phone at 866-325-0045.
Sincerely,
Tomy Durden Manager, Office of Change Management
The Planet sent you this email because your contact address is linked to an account in our customer database. This email is used exclusively as our channel for notifying you about critical maintenance issues that may affect your server, and for important company news that could affect your business. For this reason, we do not allow any opt-outs on these notices. You are receiving this note because the message above directly concerns one of your accounts. If you do not wish to receive these important notifications at this address, please update your contact information in The Planet's customer portal.
Check the highlighted portion there. It tells you something: they are serious about their product and will not let customers do anything that can harm themselves if possible. It's just another one of those things that makes The Planet an excellent choice. Small to be sure, but it's often small things that make a company great.
Cheers,
Ryan
