It doesn't lie, and it's virtually impossible to fake. Bitorrent popularity with leecher and seeder stats is probably about the most reliable marketing/popularity statistic out there.
No company is likely to setup 25,000 computers to download it's own torrent. It would be meaningless anyways. That popularity needs to come from a bitorrent tracker like The Pirate Bay.
It's an organic process that can be verified by sampling P2P networks. There's nothing opaque about it. It's open for anyone to look at and about as transparent as you can get.
